The drum can turn even when the dryer is not producing heat: tumbling and heating are separate functions. But damp clothes alone do not prove the heater has failed—airflow and the laundry load also affect drying. First separate “no heat” from “some heat, but clothes stay wet.” [1–3]
Based on Whirlpool and Maytag guidance for conventional gas and electric dryers. Heat-pump and ventless dryers need their own instructions; do not apply an external-vent checklist to a machine without one.
The drum turns, but the load gets no heat
Maytag explains that the drum and heating element are separate. Motion is therefore not proof that the heating system is working. Its list of possible heating issues includes the power supply, heating components and a thermal fuse. These are possibilities, not parts to order on the strength of one symptom. 1
What to note: Record the selected cycle, whether the problem occurs throughout it, and any displayed message. This gives support a clearer starting point than “the dryer is broken.” We do not use a cold load to diagnose a failed element.
Gas and electric dryers can behave differently
Whirlpool describes conventional electric dryers whose motor can operate even when the heating power supply is interrupted. For the gas dryers it discusses, a closed gas supply can allow tumbling without heat. Both situations explain why the machine can appear partly functional. 2
Confirm the dryer type from its documentation. Supply checks involving voltage, wiring or gas connections belong with a qualified professional; this article does not walk you through them. Whirlpool recommends a qualified technician or electrician when the supply is uncertain. 2
It gets warm, but the clothes stay damp
This is a different observation. Whirlpool's drying-performance guidance describes how restricted airflow can extend drying time. On a vented dryer, a dirty lint screen or crushed exhaust hose can keep moist air from leaving effectively. Heat being present does not settle the airflow question. 3
Load conditions matter too: an oversized load leaves less room for circulation, while soaking-wet clothes add moisture the dryer has to remove. Tell support whether the clothes were unusually wet before drying, rather than assuming the problem started in the dryer. 3
What you can confirm: Follow your manual for normal lint-screen care and loading. If a vent is inaccessible, Whirlpool suggests professional service. Do not turn this observation into a project to disconnect or move the appliance yourself. 3
When to stop investigating
If normal owner checks do not explain the lack of heat, arrange service. Whirlpool recommends professional help for examining or replacing heating elements and thermal fuses because that work involves disassembly. A suspected failed fuse is not something to bypass. 2
Our guidance stops at understanding the symptom and the manufacturer's permitted owner checks. It does not include opening panels, testing live circuits or adjusting gas connections. Use your manual's safety instructions and official service route.
Questions people ask
Does cold air mean the heating element is broken?
Not necessarily. Maytag lists more than one possible heating issue, and gas dryers use a burner rather than the electric heating element described in many repair articles. 1
Will it still dry if there is no heat?
Maytag says drying capability without heat is limited. Repeatedly finding wet laundry does not tell you which component is at fault. 1
Should I replace a part before calling?
This guide cannot identify a failed part from the symptom. The manufacturer's recommended next step for internal heating-system investigation is professional service. 2
